Re-Applying
Renewing Your Financial Aid
Receiving financial aid helps you to pursue an online educational program, but once you've secured funding, then what? Reapplying for financial aid and keeping in touch with your financial aid office are both critical to maintaining your scholarships, grants, and loans.
Why Reapply?
You must reapply for financial aid each year. Your financial circumstances may change from year to year, and your financial aid package depends on a number of factors:
- The extent of your financial need
- Your eligibility for other resources
- The availability of funds
For example, the amount of aid you may be offered can change dramatically if you have family members who are also enrolled in educational programs and receiving aid. Conversely, if family members leave school, it may also affect your eligibility for aid.
School Requirements
Your financial aid package also depends on making satisfactory progress in your educational program. Depending on your school, you may be required to maintain a specific GPA or complete a designated number of credits per term to continue receiving certain forms of funding.
FAFSA Renewal
You must complete the U.S. Department of Education's Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before you can be considered for Federal aid and potentially for other sources of funding. You need to complete a new FAFSA every year. The FAFSA renewal form, however, is considerably shorter than the regular application, and you may be eligible to complete it online. The deadline for the FAFSA renewal is generally in mid-March, and you should receive a reminder via email or postal mail.
Financial Aid Office
In addition to completing your FAFSA, you should keep in touch with your school's financial aid office throughout the year. As you complete your educational program, your qualifications may change, and you may be eligible for new scholarship opportunities as you move forward with your education. The financial aid office can also provide you with information about important application deadlines. By reapplying for aid and maintaining contact with your financial aid office, you can ensure that you maintain your eligibility to receive funding for the duration of your educational program.
